Missions at Gardenside
Prayer Request:
Jim and Mary Ann Cathey will travel to Samfya, Zambia, September 1-16. They will be working with a group of engineers and architects at the Samfya Bible School. Please pray that they will be witnesses while they are on site, that the team members would understand the ministry needs and have wisdom in implementing those needs, and also for the fellow Christian brothers and sisters in Zambia.

Supplies Needed:
Jim and Mary Ann Cathey will be working with a startup Christian ministry for troubled youth in Ojojana, Honduras during the first two weeks of October. They plan to deliver some luggage-compatible supplies such as Spanish language Bibles and small musical instruments to the missionaries. If you would like to donate some supplies, please contact Jim or Mary Ann for more details (266-0297 or cathey@uky.edu).

Local - God's Pantry, Clothing Closet:
As a church Gardenside participates in a number of local mission projects each year. Two projects with which we are especially close are God's Pantry and the Elkhorn Baptist Association Clothing Closet. While we are blessed to live in one of the richest food producing nations in the world, that does not mean we, as a nation, are hunger free. Gardensie is proud to be a distribution and referral point for God' Pantry which strives to meet the needs of many Lexington families. When families cannot afford to put food on the table chances are they are they are also in need of clothing as well. Gardenside is also pleased to host one of the Elkhorn Baptist Association's Clothing Closets on our premisis. These are just two examples of how we as a church are ministering to the needs of people right here in the Lexington area.

National - Gulf Coast Reconstruction:
It's hard to believe it has been over three and a half years since hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans and the Mississippi gulf coast. However, three years later, thousands of displaced residents in Mississippi and Louisiana are still living in trailers. Gardenside responded as did many churches across the nation with food, clothing, and other relief supplies. Church members also traveled to the troubled region to help with the reconstruction as well. According to Doug Mitchell, "The devastation is mind boggling. There are whole communities where not a single building is left standing. Delivering supplies and materials to people in need was especially difficult because there were no street signs or buildings for you to get your bearings on where you were and where you needed to go." This is just one example of how Gardenside responds to a need. It really does not matter if the need is hundreds of miles away or in our own back yard.

Brazil - A.J. and Barbara Hensley:
Kentucky natives AJ and Barbara Hensley brought some summer Brazil weather with them when they paid a visit to Gardenside on Sunday February 8th. AJ delivered the morning message as well as an update on his mission efforts in Brazil. With God's blessing they have started an orphanage in Caraguatatuba and are ministering to the needs of Brazil's growing number of street children. A Professional school is another endeavor the mission sponsors, teaching young men and women life skills while ministering to their spiritual needs as well. They have also had their share of setbacks. The church bus they used for many years finally deteriorated to the point where it was unsafe to drive. Barb says the floor was starting to get holes and they were simply afraid for the children being transported to Sunday school. They have pressed their smaller bus into service but it simply does not have the capacity of the old bus. According to AJ their Sunday school attendance has declined by 60 percent since the bus broke down. But in spite of all that they remain optimistic. They have started a bus fund and have raised over $4,000.00 toward the purchase of another bus. "New or used. It really doesn't matter to me," says AJ. "As long as it gets our kids safely to Sunday school."

If you feel God is calling you to help AJ and Barb in their mission service they are accepting donations toward the purchase of another bus. They also need:
 Supplies for the Professional School,
 Hand tools,
Office supplies (pens, pencils, and paper products)

Thailand - Mark Giurgevich and Phil Taylor:
Mark Giurgevich and Phil Taylor stepped into the Missions world earlier this year. As volunteers for the The Southern Cross Project they handed out bibles to Chinese citizens as they vacationed in Thailand. It became apparent that the devil was actively working against them when one their connecting flights got cancelled for no apparent reason. This was not the first time something like this has happened to this ministry. Thai officials blocked a bible distribution planned by the group in July of 2008. But the outcome of this mission would be much different. The Lord answered many prayers when Thai officials allowed the distribution to take place. "I came to realize that we serve a truly AWESOME GOD when I saw the joy in the faces of those people", says Mark. "They were truly hungry for the word of God. Every day we witnessed people accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior." Their mission trip ended four weeks after it began. Both say they gained a new respect for those missionaries who step into mission fields by themselves. "At least we had each other to fall back on," says Mark. "I cannot imagine doing something like this all by myself".
The Southern Cross Project is one of many missions groups working to distribute God's word to the people of China. For more information you can visit their website.
